SUMMARY:UNIFY HIGH LEVEL EVENT : Accelerating climate action in the EU and Member States through the Fit for 55 package and National Plans
DESCRIPTION:UNIFY project partners are organising a high level event to discuss how the ‘Fit for 55’ package and national plans (such as National Energy and Climate Plans and National Long-Term Strategies) can pave the way for 1.5°C compatible policies in Europe.\n\nDiederik Samsom, Head of Cabinet for First Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans will join as a keynote speaker to unpack the next steps in the ‘Fit for 55’ package. A panel will follow discussing how we can further enhance the EU’s climate ambition through the ‘Fit for 55’ package.\nIn addition, this event will host the launch of Climate Analytics’ recent research on 1.5°C compatible emission reduction pathways for the EU and nine Member States. Their report illustrates that the 1.5°C target is still within our reach if we strongly reduce our energy consumption while multiplying the renewable energy capacities during this decade. The EU and its Member States thus have to increase the level of ambition of their climate and energy targets: we need to turn the ‘Fit for 55’ package into a ‘Fit for 1.5’ package.\nIn light of Climate Analytics’ findings, we will discuss with European decision makers and civil society representatives how national plans such as National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) and National Long-term Strategies can deliver policies that truly enable emission reduction pathways in line with the 1.5°C objective.\nFIRST PANEL: “Enhancing EU’s climate ambition through the Fit for 55 package”\n14 October 2021, 10.00 – 11.30 am CET\nKeynote Speaker: Diederik Samsom, Head of Cabinet for First Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans\nPanelists:\nWendel Trio, CAN Europe\nUrsula Woodburn, Corporate Leaders Group Europe\nMonica Frassoni, European Alliance to Save Energy\nBenjamin Denis, IndustriAll Europe\nMarcin Kowalczyk, WWF Poland\nSECOND PANEL: Pathways for Member States to turn the “Fit for 55” package into “Fit for 1.5”\n14 October 2021, 13.00 – 14.30 CET\nKeynote Speaker:\nMichiel Schaeffer, Lead Science Advisor, Climate Analytics\nOur keynote speaker, Michiel Schaeffer, from the research group Climate Analytics, will share the results of their most recent study on 1.5°C compatible pathways for the EU and nine Member States, illustrating that the 1.5°C target is still within reach.\nPanelists:\nYolanda Garcia Mezquita, DG ENER\nDavid Howell, SEO Birdlife/ Spain\nKaterina Davidova, Center for Energy and Transport, Czechia\n \nDISCLAIMER:\nThis event is organised under the UNIFY, 1.5°C Pathways for Europe and EUKI projects that aim to accelerate transition to a low carbon economy in Europe. It is co-funded by the LIFE Programme of the European Commission, the Swedish Postcode Foundation, and the European Climate Initiative (EUKI) of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
